A special man, after being released from prison, knew exactly where to go. After hearing the story of "Shinigami" (God of Death) from a traditional comic storyteller, he decided to become his apprentice. But Yakumo (the storyteller) had never had an apprentice before, yet contrary to everyone's expectations, he accepted the enthusiastic former prisoner and gave him the nickname "Yotaro" (meaning foolish man). As Yotaro happily began his new life, he met other people in Yakumo's life, including Konatsu. Konatsu was the daughter of one of the famous storytellers and after her father's sad death, Yakumo adopted her as his own. Konatsu loved her father's storytelling and really wanted to become a storyteller herself, but this was impossible for women.
